Reasonable Accommodations

A reasonable accommodation is a modification or adjustment to a job or work environment that enables a qualified individual with a disability (or pregnancy-related condition, when applicable) to perform essential job functions.

Examples may include:

  • Modified work schedules
  • Assistive technology
  • Adjustments to workplace policies
  • Physical workplace modifications

How to Request an Accommodation

Employees should request reasonable accommodations through their agency’s Human Resources office or designated ADA Coordinator.

The Office of Workforce Engagement (OWE) does not process or approve reasonable accommodation requests. However, if an employee believes an accommodation request was denied due to unlawful discrimination, they may file an EEO complaint with their agency. Additionally OWE does not handle appeals for ADA accommodation denials. Please consult your agency HR office or the EEOC.

Important: A reasonable accommodation request is not the same as filing an EEO complaint. Accommodation requests should be directed to your agency’s HR office.
