Federal immigration reform laws, such as the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 and related amendments, established compliance procedures such as the Form I-9. Employers must complete the Form I-9 to ensure that all individuals hired to
perform work are authorized for employment in the U.S. All State agencies must verify the identity and employment authorization of each new hire and rehire within three business days of the employee’s start date. This includes completing
and retaining a Form I-9 for each employee, reviewing and recording the documentation presented, and refraining from discriminating against employees and potential employees on the basis of national origin or citizenship. For more information
and instructions for completing the Form I-9, visit the USCIS website to access the Handbook for Employers.
