Governor's Awards FAQs

Who is eligible for consideration?

Full-time and part-time classified, restricted, “at will" employees and faculty staff are eligible. The program is sponsored in part by the Virginia Credit Union.

Can anyone submit a nomination for a Governor’s Award?

State agencies nominate employees for the Governor’s Awards. Nomination forms and instructions are sent to all agency heads with criteria and the submission process.  Each agency’s process for determining nominees may be different. Many agencies allow employees to nominate their colleagues for agency awards that may be eligible for consideration as a Governor’s Award nominee.

What are the categories?

The categories for the Governor’s Awards are:

  • Agency Star (outstanding state employee);
  • Career Achievement (significant career achievements during state service);
  • Community Service and Volunteerism (outstanding record of participating in volunteer or community activities);
  • Customer Service (outstanding achievement in serving agency or Commonwealth’s customers)
  • Innovation (outstanding achievement in creative or new ideas implemented within state government)
  • Teamwork (outstanding achievement as a team or part of multiple teams)
  • Workplace Health, Wellness and Safety (outstanding achievement in promoting a healthier lifestyles and a safe and healthy work environment)

Who selects the Governor’s Award recipients?

Recipients are selected as the result of a two-tiered judging process by the Governor’s Awards Committee, which consists of the Governor’s Cabinet, Cabinet deputies and agency heads.

Will there be a special ceremony to honor award recipients?

The Governor’s Awards ceremony will be held at the Executive Mansion on May 17, 2017.

Can others participate in the ceremony?

Employees may sign up to participate as Ambassadors at the awards ceremony.

What is the Ambassadors Program?

Ambassadors are state employees who submit an application and are selected at random from seven regions of the Commonwealth. The Ambassadors represent the state employee workforce as a whole. Persons who are selected as Ambassadors attend the Governor’s Awards program and luncheon. Attendance as an Ambassador is dependent upon supervisor and HR approval.
