Open Enrollment Courses

Understanding and Using the Grievance Procedure | Available Online

Learn the fundamentals of using the grievance procedure to resolve workplace disputes. Participants will learn about the roles and responsibilities of the grievant, management respondents, agency head, the Department of Employment Dispute Resolution, hearing officers, and the courts in resolving grievances. 3 hours. MVP required course. This course provides credit toward HRI and VaCPM.

Who should attend: state employees, supervisors, managers, and human resource staff. Note: All supervisors and managers are statutorily mandated to take this course.


Workplace Conflict Management Skills | Available Online

This course discusses various aspects of conflict in the workplace. Participants will learn how to analyze the underlying causes of interpersonal workplace conflict in order to appropriately intervene. Participants will also learn about typical workplace conflict behavior and how to manage those behaviors effectively in order to prevent workplace conflict from becoming destructive. 3 hours. MVP required course. This course provides credit toward HRI and VaCPM.

Who should attend: state employees,supervisors, managers, human resource and training staff.


Best Practices in Employee Discipline and Discharge

Address crucial disciplinary and discharge issues through lecture, discussion and case studies. Topics will include: the role of documentation in disciplinary actions; due process; the essential elements of a pre-disciplinary investigation; selecting the appropriate level of discipline; the need for consistency in applying the Standards of Conduct; and Human Resource’s role in the disciplinary process. 3 hours. This course provides credit toward HRI, VaCPM and MVP.

Who should attend: supervisors, managers, human resource and training staff.


Enhancing Management's Response to Employee Grievances

Develop and hone skills in conducting the grievance procedure's fact-finding meeting; gathering and analyzing relevant information; noting underlying patterns; and making decisions based on best practices and the legitimate business interests of the agency. 3 hours. Credit for this course counts toward HRI, VaCPM, and MVP.

Who should attend: managers and human resource staff. Basic familiarity with the mechanics of the current grievance procedure is a prerequisite.


Workplace Dispute Resolution Services Overview | Available Online

This program provides an overview of the workplace dispute resolution tools provided by the Office of Employment Dispute Resolution (EDR). Section 2.2-3000(B) of the Code of Virginia requires agencies in the Executive Branch to promote the services of EDR. This program is meant to help agencies familiarize employees with EDR and its services.

Who should attend: all state employees.


Agency Specific Courses

Subject to the availability of its training staff, EDR now provides any of the above open enrollment courses at an agency's site at no charge, with the exception of the trainer's travel-related expenses, consistent with state travel regulations.
