What is mediation?
Mediation is a confidential, fair, and voluntary process in which a neutral third person (mediator) assists individuals in resolving their conflicts. The mediator aids the parties in making decisions together, based on an understanding of their own views, the other's views, and the situation they face.
What is EDR's role in providing workplace mediation, and how can I request mediation?
EDR's statewide mediation program allows state agency employees of the Commonwealth of Virginia to express their thoughts and feelings associated with workplace disputes in a safe, nonjudgmental environment that enables them to create their own resolutions. EDR's mediation services are available to all state employees (free of charge) and will not affect an employee's grievance rights where the parties have agreed in writing to extend the time requirements of the grievance procedure.
To request a mediation, simply inform your Human Resources Officer or Agency Mediation Coordinator of your workplace conflict. The process is voluntary, so all parties must agree to participate. Your Agency Mediation Coordinator will then contact EDR and we will schedule your mediation. Mediations will be:
Confidential -(generally, all conversations during a mediation are considered private, unless the parties say otherwise)
Fair - (whether the conflict involves supervisor, manager or co-worker, everyone is treated equally)
Voluntary - (you can't be forced into a mediation or a resolution)
